And finally...

... Viewer Feedback!

These are the questions that we asked aselection of people to fill out.

1. What genre do you think the film is from? What makes you think this?
Horror Action

Comedy sci-fi

2. Do you think the editing worked well to create an eerie atmosphere when required?

3. Did you find the story engaging? Would you like to watch more of the film and why?

4. Do you think the characters fitted in with the genre? E.g. where they stereotypical characters.

5. Do you think the film flowed well?

6. Which of the following would you watch the film for?

Personal identity (connection with characters)

Surveillance (what’s going on in the world)

Personal relationship (do they watch it in order to discuss it)

Diversion (escapism)

Basically I got a mixed bag of feedback... back. I asked 6 people to fill in the paper most of these selected Horror as the genre, 2 however ticked Horror and Comedy, and 1 selected Action. The reason they gave for ticking Action was that it wasn't funny...

Fortunately the others said Horror due to the tension and overall mystery of the piece. The Comedy aspect came from the dancing mainly but 1 person said that it was the squelch noise that made it funny.

Everyone said in their own words that the editing had pretty much worked to create tension and the eerie atmosphere. A couple commented on how the music built up tension and the use of fading in and out helped bridge the gap between the two time slots. However one helpful person (Action man) just wrote no.

Everyone said that wanted to continue to watch the film as it set up a number of enigma codes, like what happened to the first girl and why the lights went off. A couple of others said they wanted to see if the characters became friends or got revenge. Action man was helpful again and just said not really.

This question got the most varied response out of them all. Most didn’t seem to know what a stereotype was. The few that did said that the couple of characters shown filled the stereotypical roles of the genre especially the female characters. The male teacher seemed to throw people off as they felt he should’ve been older and creepier for the Horror genre.

The audience, apart from guess who… I think that person had it in for me… said that the film flowed well. They felt that the pace was good and that it all flowed well from scene to scene. Some people said that the sounds levels let it down a little but over all it was good.

The final question confused a lot of them, despite the descriptions of each choice. 1 person ticked personal identity a couple left it blank and then the rest ticked diversion and/or personal relationship.

So as I said it was a mixed bag in terms of feedback with 1 person not being very helpful at all.

Evaluation! part 2!

ill just carry on here :) the first part is below this one... or should be...

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for our piece would definitely be late teens/early 20’s mainly. The film would appeal to fans of the horror genre and fans of the genre vary from young to old, but due to the conventions of the horror genre many fans are too young to watch the films in the cinema. Due to the gore later in the film it would possibly get an 18 certificate. The scenes are fairly gory with one person getting beheaded and another getting her throat slit, however depending on how the scenes are directed could result in the film ending up with a 15 certificate. The bbfc says that for a film to be a 15 it may use horror and gore but “The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable.” I feel that if we were to film these scenes we would be able to decide on the level of gore without losing the effect of the film. Another issue raised about the certification would be the use of scissors as a weapon. This is an easily obtainable item and therefore the bbfc say “Dangerous techniques (eg combat, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on imitable detail. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised.” This could also effect the final certification. With the film being set at a school the setting would still feel familiar to the above group, and for those older it could bring back memories.

How did you attract/address your audience?

We attracted the target audience by using the normal conventions of the horror genre from giving off connotations of fear to the squelch sound effects. We also set the piece in a school to relate to teenagers and to offer a small insight into a typical modern day school (the various personas of the pupils and staff.) The use of teenage actors and young staff not only enforce this insight but make the setting feel more familiar to the younger audience. The story also provides an escape from reality slightly by making the audience think that the school is haunted.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

As the main editor on the piece I feel that I have learnt a lot about how to film, edit and use the various pieces of equipment commonly used in filming. The first thing was learning how to use a camera and what effects can be gained from using certain shots and various features that a camera has, for example zoom. I also learnt how to use a tripod alongside the camera for a less shaky shot and to make panning smoother. I also learnt how to use Adobe premier to edit what we had recorded. I learnt how to make clips shorter or how to stretch them. I also learnt the importance of pasting clips into the right place to create continuity and a smooth final piece. With our film being a horror piece the use of sound was essential, for this I used Google to find some copyright free music. I then learnt how to cut and paste the track into the right place through premier to create the required atmosphere. However this created a further problem, sound levels, Because of this I learnt how to raise and lower them. This also helped balance out the levels as sometimes one clip was louder then the other due to the position of the camera during filming. I also learnt how to put text over the clips (okay I spelt school wrong, but hey the text appeared over the clip) this was vital to the project as the text was used to explain the scene and show that time had elapsed. The text, I learnt, was easily changeable to whatever font you wanted and to appear wherever on the screen. I also had to use Photoshop to make the FEAR-tre sign and through this learnt how to smudge and blur objects. Overall I feel that I have learnt a lot about the technologies used to create and edit films and feel that I have had a small insight into the world of filmmaking.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Most of the stuff I learnt I have already stated above. The skills I had I feel where basic when we filmed our preliminary task. However I now feel that I have learnt a lot, not just about the technologies used but the process as a whole. For example I learnt about camera maps and shooting schedules, something I never knew was involved. I also learnt that time keeping skills are vital, not just to meet deadlines but also for continuity. I also never realised before how much time and how structured a script had to be. For the preliminary task we just improvised the dialogue, whereas for the opening to the Fear-tre I wrote a script.

Evaluation!

no funny-ness just straight into it.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real Media products?

After a lot of research into the horror genre we chose to use as many iconic features of the genre as we could. For example the title of the film “The FEAR-tre” is similar to “Scream” in that the title plays on the conventions of the genre. We also used quick cuts that we found in things like the decent or Saw. This gives the film tension and can also create connotations of fear or panic, common themes of the horror genre. We also chose to kill off a character early on in the piece, not only creating an enigma but setting up the idea of something supernatural. We chose to use the iconic squish noise as the character was crushed, this clarifies to the viewer that the character has died, painfully, even though it hasn’t been seen. By doing this it causes the viewer to use their imagination, this can then make a film scarier as the image of the death is completely up to the viewer, whether it was incredibly gory or tame is up to them. Along with the sound effects we used non-diegetic music to create tension, we even kept the music as creepy as possible for the dance routine.

Aside from the above we didn’t overly challenge or try to change any of the conventions. We didn’t use some of the more obvious conventions like blood or knives, or even supernatural beings. We hinted at the latter but never showed any. I think we could have used some more of the conventions in horror films but then it would have been just another horror film. If the horror genre has proved anything its that it has to be different every now and then and change the viewer’s idea of what ‘horror’ really is.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The mise en scene shows that our piece is based in a school theatre and therefore shows off some of the typical teenage stereotypes. For example we have a popular stuck up girl who has her dim witted follower. These two girls pick on the new girl simply for being new. We have a teacher that will stop after school to watch them rehearse to make sure they’re ready. And the new girl who feels slightly lost and is just trying to fit in. These stereotypes give a good insight into school life in the 21st century and are also typical characters found in teen horror films. The fact that the two scenes are set ten years apart is important. When the story of how the girl died is told has changed due to rumours etc showing how teenagers of today can blow things out of proportion. Overall the girls are portrayed as talented and enjoying doing extra curricular things, however they can be mean and manipulative.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

After a taking a look at boxofficemojo.com I found out these figures for teen horror films.

Prom Night: $43,869,350 screengems sony/coluimbia

Scream: $103,046,663 dimension

I know what you did last summer $72,586,134 sony

Urban legend $38,072,438 sony

Final destination $53,331,147 newline

The blair witch project $140,539,099 Artisan

Based on the above I believe that sony would be a good distributor for our film. They seem keen on producing teen/ high school horror films with scream being the second highest earning from the above. The company also have a wide fan base from their wide range of products enabling us to push advertising and various promotions. I also think that they would do a good job since they distributed scream which redefined the horror genre. I believe that our film has a lot in common with scream so it seems like a perfect fit.

The script!.. no not the band

Dissapointing eh?

Anywho heres the script for our openign to THE FEAR-tre. I'd just like to point out that all of it isn't in or that the actors changed it slightly. During editing we had to cut out nearly all of the first half so the two boys ( played by liam and foxy) no longer appear, more on that in my evaluation(coming soon) though, :)

The FEAR-tre.

Int. Location 1- day.

I was right!

Barbara:
Did you have some cheese? It's very late, darling. Come to bed, heh?

Mike:

Mike:
Go ahead, we’ll watch from the auditorium.

camera map!

This is the camera map that foxy created. Its for the first half of our opening that happens in the past. We should have another one in a bit when we finish sorting out the second half. EDIT: tada second one is up :)

Whats, what and whos what?

Here's a list of everything that we've done so far and who's done it.

Shooting schedule: Kendall leaper
Shot list: liam Thomson
Script: Me (Daniel Carnell)
Storyboard: Me
Camera map: Thomas Fox

So far thats it but i'll update the list as we do more.

EDIT: Well we filmed and edited and weren't very happy with the end result so we stopped one night after school to re-film it.

This time its turned out pretty damn cool, it still needs a bit of polish but its alot better. It was mostly edited by me and Kendall chose and found the music. With a bit of polish i think it'll be awesome :)

We got to film mr gibb yesterday and i have to say his acting was incredible, that guy deserves and oscar... no 10 oscars...
We've still got to find 3 people to play the 'future' girls though... Oh and the time scale is going to have to be different to what it was in the treatment as we couldn't get 50's style costumes.

Developing on that it hasn't been easy to film. There are a number of school shows going on at the moment and so the theatre kept changing. Then theres the issue with the theater only really being free for us to use on a wednesday for 1 period. Sure theres last lesson friday but not all of us are free then. So its basically more awkward then we first thought. Then theres a lack of 'actors' that are free when we are, or willing to do it. However were working on it and slowly getting there. We also had issues with cameras and sound levels etc, but there as good as we can do with our amateur equipment. :)

I'll end on a happy note though, as i said earlier we managed to find some music that really helps giv eit a slightly more professional look. I managed to edit text to appear over the top of the footage and we came up with a company name, DLKT productions... no prizes for seeing what we did there. I think thats pretty much everything so far, there might be more after we film the scond half, hopefully not, but we'll have to see :)

Film Treatment

This is the treatment for the group that i'm in's film. We have no character names so i used various words that i could see whilst typing this. I may have also added random bits of commentary in from me. Anyway here we go:

Title : The FEAR-ter!
Genre: Horror.

A mysterious murder, an accident or a haunted school. When a young girl dies rehearsing a play rumors spread and over the years fade until 50 years later when the chilling tale is unearthed. Strange things begin to happen, but is it the work of a ghost or something far worse?

Note:The film begins with the name of the production companies and distributors etc fading up onto a black screen.
The first scene fades in to show some students rehearsing a play. The words theater and 195_ flash up over the action before fading away. A teacher supervising asks to see the next scene. The girl remains on stage to do her solo piece. She hears a creaking/cracking noise and looks up. The camera shows the roof and nothing appears to be wrong. The girls face turns to a look of horror as we hear a loud crack. The screen turns black as she shuts her eyes and we hear a squish sound.

The next scene begins with the camera zoomed in on the theater lights. The camera then zooms and pans out to reveal some girls dancing with their back to the camera. The words " 50 years later" flash up on screen. We then see someone entering the room who appears to be a teacher. The camera then takes on a point of view of the teacher and we see the girls from the front as another enters onto the stage. The three girls run through a routine together, happy with the progress the girls have made the teacher congratulates them and tells them to stop for the day.

The two original girls on stage begin to talk about the third girl. We learn that she is new to the school and doesn't have many friends yet( for ease later on she will be known as Draft). The two girls Beckon her over and introduce themselves ( for ease they shall be known as italic and publish). They tell Draft that the theater is haunted as a girl died in it. Draft believes every word and a look of pure terror takes over her face. Italic begins to laugh and publish follows suit. Italic tells her that it was all a joke and that its just a rumor. Suddenly the lights go out and the girls are plummeted into darkness, shortly after a door slams shut.

The screen remains black and the title fades up onto the screen before turning red and sliding off. We hear a school bell and the new scene fades in. It shows a typical school day in the life of Draft. We also see Italic ( a popular girl) and Publish ( her dimwitted loyal follower) throughout the day.

After the school day is over the girls go back to the theater to rehearse. They begin to talk about the weird happenings the previous night when they are interrupted by three boys. The boys ( again for ease and because we don't have names for them will be : Shortcut, Bold and Save) are introduced to Draft through Italic who tells her that they too are in the play. As they go to leave Shortcut notices that the rope for the curtains is broke. He tells the others ( who are all now friends... what thats what happens in real films...) to go ahead and he'll catch up. Shortcut tries the curtains but they wont shut. He tries to fix the rope but finds that there is too much of it so he raps some around his neck and body. We see the curtains move slightly before they are quickly pulled shut, hanging Shortcut who is left dangling in the middle of the theater. The scene fades out.

The next day the cast of the school play join the rest of the school in an assembly. Here they learn of the accidental death of Shortcut. Rumors begin to stir about the ghost wanting revenge. However the group feel in no real danger and so arrange for a practice that night, even though they're a member down.

We see Bold doing an experiment in the science lab. We hear a creak outside and Bold goes out to investigate. He looks around but nothings there, and so he goes back inside. He grabs a can of spray that he needs to use which the top comes off, covering him in it. Before he has chance to do anything he is set on fire.

Save arrives at the rehearsal and tells the others that Bold should be along shortly,Publish suggests starting anyway as she has to be going soon. The group take their positions and as they begins to rehearse the camera fades out. It fades back into to show the group tired and Publish ready to head home.

publish leaves the remaining three to practice and heads to pick some things up from her locker. She hears a noise coming from down the corridor. The noise sounds like wind rattling the locker doors, so she merely shrugs and continues. We then hear a loud clunk. She moves her head out of the locker and looks at the camera. Seeing nothing she places her head back inside to find the item she's after. Next we see the locker door slam, beheading Publish. Blood begins spraying from her neck and her body slumps to the floor, creating a pool of blood.

Upon hearing the loud bang Italic, Draft and Save run out to see what has happened. Italic breaks down and slumps to the floor in shock. Save takes a closer look and notices that there is a footprint in the blood. Draft comes to the conclusion that the killer must have missed it when he cleaned up the rest. Realizing that the other deaths weren't accidental and that they could be next, they pick up Italic and run to find a teacher.

They decide to split up, and Draft is the first to find a teacher, who happens to be the one we saw come in watching the first rehearsal. Draft tells him about the footprints and he agrees to help re-find the others and to see if they can track the killer. Draft and the teacher find Save close by, still in one piece. The teacher tells them to look in the theater for Italic while he looks for her in her favorite place, the schools hair and beauty room.

The lights flicker on as italic enters the hair and beauty room. She reassures herself that it's just a bad dream and that nothing can happen in her favorite place. She sits in one of the hair dressing chairs to try and begin to calm down. She shuts her eyes and begins to breath slowly. Meanwhile Save and Draft decide that the theater is a bad idea and begin to head towards the beauty room. Italic opens her eyes and sees a hooded figure behind her. He grabs her head and takes a pair of scissors out of a pot. Italic panics and tries to pull away ripping some of hair from her head. She backs away but trips over another chair. The killer looks down at her and pauses for a moment. He then slices her throat.

Draft and Save open the door and see the killer trying to clean up. The killer spins round and heads toward them. Draft and save begin to run through the poorly lit corridors of school before ending up in the theater. The killer catches up to them and stabs/throws the scissors into save. Draft backs away in horror and ends up trapping herself in a corner. The killer removes his hood and revels that he is the teacher.

Draft asks him why he did it. He tells that the rumors of the girl where true and that they provided a perfect cover up. Draft goes onto ask why them? To which he replies that they were ruining his beloved play and enjoyed making jokes about ghosts, so he wanted to show them how funny they really are. Draft calls him crazy, he begins to laugh hysterically and wishes Draft to break a leg.. or more. Draft looks down and realizes that she is stood on top of a trap door.

As the teacher goes to press a switch he is knocked to the ground by Save. The scissors didn't kill him and he managed to find a large fire extinguisher. He then calls the teacher several foul names and begins to smash his head in with the extinguisher.

Save then drops the extinguisher and shuffles his way over to Draft who leaps into his arms. They hug for a moment before walking out of the theater and into the corridors. The Film ends with them walking down a dimly lit corridor ( light coming threw the glass in the door/ around the frame at the end of the corridor only) hand in hand towards the door. As they open the door light floods into the corridor, creating a flash and causing the two to disappear. We then hear the doors slam and the screen turns black. The credits then begin to roll and the soundtrack starts.

A montage of horror!

I apologize for the gore, nudity and the creator of the video's choice of using the exorcist so much... However it was one of the best on youtube. If it works anyway...

Never leave work till this late again...

Meh, i've been busy hunting down songs to learn and play for stars so i almost forgot. And yes i like the lol cat pictures they melt the heart and are just so damn cu.. cool.

Moving swiftly on...

As i said in my first post we looked at the opening to Storm breaker a while back. We also took a look at the woman in black and the most recent, a film of our choice from our genre, which for this post will be 1408.
Storm breaker and 1408 both start in a similar way in that most of the titles are played over the top of the action and that they both go straight in to it. The woman in black however begins with the titles. By doing this the woman in black remains mysterious and with the creepy music and titles it makes it obvious to the viewer that they are watching a horror film. Storm breaker also works fairly successfully, with high octane action happening one minute, and a school boy talking the next. This not only starts the film with a bang but reflects the idea of a secret identity, a key feature in some spy films. 1408 initially gives off an air of mystery and freight but nothing as clear as the woman in black.

Out of the three, storm breaker has the most action packed and interesting opening. However this may be due to the target audience being children/ young teens who have a short attention span. The woman in black and 1408 are aimed at late teen upwards and there for can afford to be more intricate with the story telling as adults generally have a longer attention span.

Overall they all work very well as openings, even if the woman in black did seem to get a bit dull... I know feel however that i have a better understanding of film openings and hope to use some techniques in my film.

Horror openings, that aren't so scary...

The genre is chose for my coursework is Horror.

For futher research apart ,rom the grid in the post below, We watched the openings to two films. These films where 1408 and Final destination 3.

First off we looked at a print out, giving a brief background to the horro genre. In this it states that the horror genre inflates any anexietes a society has. However in modern times it seems that the writers of horror films go for more of a shock factor, using gore and normal everyday people instead of werewolves or vampires. This my be because The genre also works on cycles and more often then not one film will "borrow" ideas from another film. The genre is also full of remakes ( my bloddy valentine 3D and halloween) or spin-offs from films or crossovers( freddy vs jason.)

The first film we watched was 1408. This is a film based off a book by stephen king. The opening begins straight away with the main character driving in a storm. The titles fade up onto the screen and then slide down as if they are part of the rain. As he pulls up to check a sign the glare from the headlights create the the title 1408. This too then fades away like the others. There is slightly creepy music playing, a convention of the horror genre. When the character arrives at his destination we can see that it is an old fashioned house and the welcoming couple seem odd. They talk about ghosts and the building being haunted , again another convention, giving the impression that he is a paranormal investigator. He also seems very calm and seems to take his job seriously. the film seemed to be aimed at young adults or adults. It is also obviously aimed at fans of the book or stephen king. The opening wasn't at all scary but it did set the scene and mood of the film quiet well.

The second film i watched the opening to was final destination 3. The first 5 minuets of the film was dedicated to the credits and titles. The names etc. faded up and then back off over the top of footage of various carnival things. These mainly centered around tarot cards or things that look creepy ie, strange clowns, freak show type posters ... a carousel. Throughout this carnival sounds can be heard along with the tense creepy music associated with horror films. The Main title of the film fades up onto the screen and is written in a circus style font. It then appears to burst and become a cloud of red dust or blood. The film then begins with teenagers at a graduation carnival. There are many different characters, each portraying a different representation, however the main ones are: sex obsessed, immature, violent and big headed. From the first 10 minuets i would have said the film was aimed at young teens. The constant referral to sex or obsession with the opposite sex made me think it was aimed at later teens maybe 16+. This is because no body actually dies or anything scary happens until about 25 minuets in. I personally thought the opening dragged on a bit with what appeared to be the main character just taking pictures, i now know though that these pictures play a key role later in the film.

Overall the two films presented two very different ways of opening a horror film. Personally i think that 1408 had the better opening but i don't feel that either have enough grip, shock factor or just general horror in their openings.

Here is some work that we did on friday. Its a grid that me and liam filled in to show various aspects of our chosen genre, Horror. (click to enlarge)

First post!

The amazing first post by me !

Err yeah...

For random people accidently coming here, welcome and this blog is for my AS level media stuff.

So ill get the ball rolling and begin with a post about film openings.

We are currently looking at the openings of various films as research for our coursework. One of the films we have watched is the epic spy film... "Stormbreaker"

The film is based off a book, with the same name, and centers around a teenage spy. Kinda like James Bond, but minus the bond girls and stuff. Anyway, we watched the opening to the film and made notes on conventions, Audience, representation and the titles. Woo !
